LEARN MORE ABOUT Fort Pulaski National Monument, GA

Between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia, lies Cockspur Island, which is home to Fort Pulaski National Monument. It protects Fort Pulaski, where the Union Army successfully tested rifled cannon in combat during the American Civil War in 1862, rendering brick fortifications obsolete.

What is the most well-known feature of Fort Pulaski?

During the Civil War, Fort Pulaski was considered one of the "most impressive port defense buildings" in the United States. Its 7 1/2-foot thick brick walls and spectacular masonry protected it from assault until 1862, when Union troops employed new, experimental rifled cannon to shattered the walls.

Fort Pulaski, is it a star fort?

A ravelin played a similar purpose in many starforts (see the outstanding example at the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida), but Fort Pulaski's Demilune is in a class by itself, at least among American forts.

What is the origin of the name Fort Pulaski?

The new fort, named after Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish immigrant who fought in the American Revolution, began building in 1829. (1775-83).
