Where did the Mighty Eighth go?

It was, however, a bloody and arduous campaign. Half of the United States' air force was lost to the Eighth Air Force. Casualties in the Army Air Forces during WWII. The Eight, in particular, lost 26,000 people. The Eighth gained 17 Medals of Honor, 220 Distinguished Service Crosses, and 442,000 Air Medals for their service.


What is the significance of the name "8th Air Force"?

The Army rebuilt its Air Forces in Europe on February 22, 1944, designating the Eighth Air Force the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe (now known as the United States Air Forces in Europe). The VIII BC became the Eighth Air Force on the same day.
