The Old Sheldon Church Ruins are a historic site located 17 miles north of Beaufort in the Sheldon district of northern Beaufort County, South Carolina.


What is the significance of the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church?

Colonel William Bull, who, along with General Oglethorpe, was instrumental in laying out Savannah, Georgia, is buried within the ruins of the chapel. It's currently a popular location for weddings, picture shoots, and ghost hunting.

Who was the arsonist who set fire to the historic OLD Sheldon Church?

General Augustine Prevost's British troops set fire to the Sheldon Church in May 1779. Sheldon Church was torched on January 14, 1865, by General Sherman's 15th Corps under General John Logan, and it was never rebuilt.
